Sources: Braves expected to sign Cuban OF Diego Tornes (+video)
Tornes, 16, would be one of the class's highest-paid players.
Cuban OF Diego Tornes was recently declared a free agent by the MLB Commissioner's Office, per sources.
Tornes is one of the top talents in the upcoming international signing period, which will open on January 15, 2025. The Atlanta Braves are the favorites to sign him for around $3M. Tornes, 16, would be one of the class's highest-paid players.
The switch-hitter, center fielder, 6.5 60-yard runner, and multi-tool player was born in Havana, Cuba, and left the island in 2021 at age 13.
Several scouts believe Tornes is one of the most advanced players in terms of tools for the upcoming international period. His hitting is given a 55-60 on the 80 scale.
Power as a switch-hitter also fluctuates in the 55-60 range, producing power from both sides. Several scouts compare him to Anthony Santander in his early career.
Tornes' arm and defense are considered plus, with gold-glove caliber potential. His overall rating is in the 55s, making him one of the top prospects for 2024/25. “His home plate discipline and strike zone command looks like that of a veteran,” one scout said.
Tornes is a product of Alex Sanchez Academy, a former MLB player for 5 seasons between 2001-2005, who has trained and polished several talents in recent years.
After receiving permission from free agency, the official signing as of January 15, 2025, remains to be done.
