Sources: Astros expected to sign Cuban OF Kevin Alvarez (+video)
Kevin is among the top talent in the 2024 class.
Cuban outfielder Kevin Alvarez was declared a free agent by the MLB Commissioner's Office in recent hours, according to sources.
The Houston Astros are favorites to sign Alvarez when a new international signing period opens on January 15, 2025. Bonus sign will be in the $2 M range. Alvarez es considered one of the best hitters in his class. I reported the mutual agreement in early March 2023.
Alvarez, 16, is a 6’4” and 180-pound power hitter out of Javier Rodriguez Academy in the Dominican Republic.
Years earlier, on December 13, 2021, Kevin left Cuba with his father Lester, hoping to one day sign with an MLB organization.
“Outstanding makeup and work ethic”, said a scout in one of his reports about Kevin.
After a lot of hard work, the left-handed hitter developed into a player with the potential to contribute in the Major Leagues. His father Lester Alvarez was a pitcher in the Cuban National Series between 2002 and 2005 with his native province of Matanzas.
Now his son Kevin is among the top talent in the 2024 class. His athleticism, power and hitting skills stand out.
Alvarez projects to be an above average hitter/Power above average. He also excels with his arm and defensive skills.
Scouts find his body and skills at that age similar to those of Kyle Tucker or young Paul O'Neill.
Kevin's signing will become official on January 15. The Texan organization remains at the top of the list of most Cuban-born players on its system in the past 5 years.
